TRAVELER’S CHECKS Once the predominant method of payment for travelers, traveler’s checks in Peru are exchanged at fewer places and at a considerably lower rate than cash. With the proliferation of ATMs, traveler’s checks are less necessary as an alternative to carrying large amounts of cash. If you use traveler’s checks, American Express is the brand most easily exchanged. In Peru, the exchange rate for traveler’s checks is perhaps 2% lower than for cash.

PromPerú, the main national organization responsible for tourism promotion and information, works alongside the Ministry of Industry, Tourism & International Business Negotiation (MITINCI), and several private entities.
