Because all three are clearly too recent in view of other dates from the same contexts, and all were processed by the same laboratory. Although Grieder believed he was sampling ash on the floor of the circular forecourt, our excavations have revealed that the sample was from a hearth just above the compact, weathered surface of the preceramic deposit which Grieder mistook for Page 22 a floor. The weathered floor of the sunken circle is over 90 centimeters above this surface, and the intervening deposit is pretemple Initial Period refuse.

Fung (1969: 2829) encountered two stone bowl fragments on the surface of Las Haldas as well. What early time period these fragments belong to is unknown, but they closely resemble examples found at Pampa de las Llamas-Moxeke and are therefore mentioned here along with early Initial Period artifacts from Las Haldas. Page 26 Subsistence Preliminary evidence indicates that virtually all animal remains from this early Initial Period occupation of Las Haldas came from the nearby ocean. The major exception consists of abundant remains of land snails which were plentiful in the lomas areas a few kilometers north of the site on Cerro Las Lomas.
