Mongolian gerbils originate from the semi-desert regions of Mongolia and northeastern China. In the wild, gerbils live in large family groups of around 20 animals, with one dominant male and female. They dig deep burrows consisting of several chambers for nesting and food storage, with multiple entrances. Environmental temperatures can vary from -40°C in winter to >50°C in the summer.

They store food over winter in burrows. In captivity they may be fed commercial rodent mixes (one tablespoon per day) with added fresh fruit and vegetables, such as lettuce, apple and carrot (Brain , 1999). Hay may also be provided. For occasional treats, raisins , melon seeds and sunflower seeds should be given . Gerbils eat over a 24-hour period and are coprophagic. Sunflower seeds are high in cholesterol and low in amino acids, vitamins and minerals, particularly calcium. Gerbils often eat sunflower seeds to the exclusion of other foods.
